From The Session

This is an update on the Zoom meeting on May17th, by Peter Savard, Clerk of Session.

Troy Ivey gave his treasurer’s report.  He indicated, that while we continue meet our expenses, offerings remain down by approximately 17% from last year. It is important to note that New Hope has continued to meet all salary obligations through the virus lockdown.  The Session felt that it was important to continue to support our employees during this trying time.  As a result, church expenses have remained at their pre-virus levels.

Troy also reported that New Hope has been granted a waiver from the Presbytery Pension fund.  We have also applied for a loan through the Payroll Protection Plan.  Since our meeting, we have been notified that the loan has been approved.  We plan to keep the money in reserve in case of an emergency.  We plan to eventually repay the loan as opposed to asking for it to be forgiven.

The Session voted to approve the purchase of an online Vacation Bible School solution.  This will enable us to provide a Bible School to our children without putting anyone at risk.  We hope that this program will also be used by other children who are not members of our congregation.

The Session is investigating allowing the resumption of the 12 Step and related meetings which take place evenings during the week.  Groups meeting here will have to adhere to stick rules for cleaning and disinfecting our facilities after each meeting.  Rev. Worth will confirm this with each group.  Groups will be required to sign a waiver protecting the church from legal actions.

We have received the check from our insurance claim.  Again, God has blessed New Hope.  We received a generous settlement that will help with our building costs.

New Hope will be hosting a Drive-By Ice Cream Social on Sunday, May 31 1:00 to 3:00 PM.  Come and drive through and get a Sundae and see other members of our congregation.  There will also be a handout showing the plans for our new building.

Peter Savard reported that the checks for our Presbytery contribution from the sale of our property have been sent out.  After much discussion our Session decided that we would like to make a direct contribution to several of the Presbytery missions with the remainder going to the Presbytery Mission Fund.  The individual missions are Hope House at UTC, the UTK Campus House, Camp John Knox, Maryville College, Morgan Scott, and Sunset Gap.  Each organization received $20,000.  The remaining $360,000 went to the Presbytery.

Ron Young gave an update on the new building and the property at 7608 Shallowford Rd. The plans for the interior layout are almost complete with just a few small details to remaining. We have looked at the layout of the building, entrances, exits, plumbing, electrical, floor coverings, bathroom location and size, the kitchen layout, and a hundred other things that go into a building. Exterior features of the building are also complete and we are now looking at stone facades, windows, roofing, and exterior paint colors.

We are in the process of granting a contract to have the property at the new site cleaned up.  Work there should commence in the next week or so.
