Session Update, April 2020

First of all, I hope this newsletter finds you all well and safe.  The past few months have been difficult for everyone and have been made even more difficult by not being able to join with you all on Sundays for worship.

The Session has continued to work on the business of the church.  Our last meeting this past Sunday was, of course a Zoom meeting.  While technology has made remote meeting possible, it’s also fraught with problems and these meetings do not always go smoothly.

At our meeting, Troy reported that, with our Sunday worship services at church on hold, our offerings are down.  He has taken several steps to help us through the current health crisis. He has applied for a waiver of our dues to the Presbytery pension fund.  He was also applied for a loan through the Payroll Protection Plan.  While the plan was exhausted before our application was processed, we are hoping that the new influx of money will put us back in the que.

As most of you know, the tornado on Easter Sunday destroyed the buildings at the new church site at 7608 Shallowford Road.  We are currently working with the insurance company to recover as much as we can to clean up and rebuild.  The Session had planned to move our offices and worship to the new site by the beginning of June, but we will be remaining where we are for at least the next year.

The Session is continuing to work with the architects to plan for our new home.  We will post new updates and plans as we receive them on our website at

The Session discussed the $480,000 from the sale of our property that we pledged to the Presbytery.  It was decided that we would send direct contributions to six of the Presbytery missions.  Each will receive $20,000.  They are UTC Campus House, UTK Campus House, Maryville College, Camp John Knox, Sunset Gap and Morgan Scott. The remaining $360,000 will go directly to the Presbytery.

As to our future worship plans at New Hope, the Session decided that, even with restrictions loosening up the threat of the Corona virus will be with us for the foreseeable future.  We have decided to continue with our current Sunday Facebook services as we assess how the virus is effecting our county.  We will be back in the New Hope sanctuary as soon as it is safe.

For now, grace and peace to you all.
